Bosses blind to workplace stress-survey

Stress in the workplace is the single biggest problem affecting employees and productivity but bosses are largely blind to its effects, a survey shows.

A fifth of workers surveyed said stress was the main factor affecting their productivity but only 11 percent of managers agreed, said a report commissioned by workplace development company Investors in People UK.

"Workplace stress is becoming a commonplace problem, but some employers obviously don't understand its adverse effects on their bottom line," said Carole Spiers of the International Stress Management Association.

"Inevitably it will increase staff turnover resulting in recruitment problems and will increase absence due to sickness."

Figures released last year showed stress has overtaken the common cold as the biggest reason behind staff absence.

The IT industry was identified as the sector most affected by stress while executive and junior management roles proved the most stressful, the survey said
